Reasons Of World War 1 - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 766 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/05/13 Category History Essay Level High school Tags: War Essay World War 1 Essay Did you like this example? In 1914, Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was murdered in cold-blood by a Serbian patriot. Tensions rose in Europe, alliances were reinforced, and the militaries of European nations such as Russia and Germany were mobilized and ready to fight. Soon after, World War 1 began. World War 1 started due to competitive imperialism, existing rival alliances, and threatening growth of militarism. European competition for imperialistic power grew tensions between nations and eventually led to the outbreak of World War 1. The race for control of land has lasted for centuries, and in the 20th century England was the biggest of the world leaders in land domination. Document E demonizes England by illustrating their government as power hungry and aggressive. The political cartoon shows them reaching out and grabbing land all over the world, and a lot of other countries saw this as wrong and therefore disliked England. Their frequent acquisitions of new land angered those nations that thought it was wrong and so it influenced the outbreak of the war. According to Document F, England had the highest colonial land area and population. This imperialistic power posed a threat to smaller empires such as Germany. England was only growing, and since they had so much more land than everyone else they could profit greatly and grow more quickly than others. The only way to stop this growth would be war in an effort to weaken this great empire. So the competitiveness in imperialism grew tensions because nations felt threatened and angered by others and sought to fight and weaken stronger countries. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Reasons Of World War 1" essay for you Create order Strong alliances in European existed before the war that forced more nations to become belligerent and ready to fight with the result that the war broke out. As seen in Document A, most of the countries in Europe belonged to either the Central Powers or Allied Powers. With there only being two alliances, each respectively significant, in Europe, one could assume there would be a rivalry between each of them, and at least some camaraderie within their own alliances. After the the killing of the Archduke, this camaraderie came to action. Document B illustrates how countries made threats against each other in defense of the countries they are aligned with. In Document B, Serbia is in the front of the picture because they were blamed for the murder of the Archduke. After Serbia comes Austria, who was greatly angered by the attack, and next was Russia, who came to defend their ally of Serbia. Similar events of defending allies repeated in a chain reaction until all of these rival nations in Europe were on the verge of war. Therefore, the strong alliances forced countries to defend some and threaten others which created strong resentment and anger that would force the continent into war. Finally, the militaristic growth of nations became too big of a threat that war, in return, became imminent and began. Document C shows a graph that gives crucial data about the growth of the militaries of the warring nations prior to the war. From the years 1890 to 1914, most of the European nations nearly tripled their original military spending from 1890. This increase in military shows a competitive race to be the strongest country militarily. Growth resembles that governments believe military power is extremely important and they want to keep up with each other. Competition like this leads to resentment and eventually a test of power, war. In Document D, the speech given explains the growth of England, Russia, and France and how Germany needs to work to stay on top. The speech explains the importance of military power in order to defend themselves. The point of view in this speech is from Germanys congress, which is important because it reveals how Germany felt threatened and felt they needed to grow stronger. The metaphor at the end of the speech means that Germany will either hit a nation, or be hit, which was said due to the high competition of military power growth. The metaphor therefore confirms that war was inevitable and going to start due to that same high competition. So, in conclusion, military growth made nations feel threatened and made them prepare themselves for war which in turn helped to start the war. The Great War erupted after years of competition in imperialism, alliances and rivalries building up in Europe, and a race for military power. The nations who had the biggest empires and the most military spending eventually became victorious in World War 1. Germany was indeed correct to feel threatened by those nations, such as France and Britain, and they were defeated in the Great War.

Review of the Disabled in the United Kingdom Free Essays

Society, in general, has been developed to accommodate the able bodied. The consequence is that dependency is automatically associated with the disabled. As such, the disabled are expected to merge seamlessly with a society that has been designed for and by the physically sound. We will write a custom essay sample on Review of the Disabled in the United Kingdom or any similar topic only for you Order Now To effect this integration, the disabled are provided with numerous rights and privileges. However, several of these provisions are difficult to access for a disabled person. In general, the disabled are regarded as acquiescent and thankful patrons and not as regular clients, endowed with responsibilities and privileges (Stevenson, 2001. P. 169). The disabled have consistently, contested subjugation and demanded incorporation into mainstream society with dignity. Such people have demonstrated their administrative capacity, as is evidenced by the fact that the British Deaf Association and the National League for the Blind had been headed and administered by the disabled. These organizations had initiated campaigns for obtaining rights for the disabled in the 1890’s (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). With the advent of the 1980’s, the disabled have continually enhanced their presence, and have in the process, emerged as an important segment of society. The United Kingdom was witness to quite a few protests, which served to increase the awareness of the general public regarding the plight of the disabled. Notable among such protests were those that had been conducted by the Disability Action Network (Marks, 1999. P. 3). Moreover, within the UK, organizations like the British Council of Disabled People have proved to be very effective in substantially mitigating the seclusion of and enhancing the self respect of the disabled. A similar task, at the international level, had been carried out by organizations like The Disabled People’s International (Marks, 1999. P. 3). The act of viewing disability, purely from the perspective of a physician, served to sideline the social significance of this problem. In fact in the 1970’s, a child diagnosed with the Down’s syndrome would have been considered incapable of being educated. All this has changed and at present, several such pupils are permitted to attend regular school and take the usual seven to eight GCSE’s. Moreover, there is no segregation by their peers (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). The 1920’s saw a dramatic increase in the number of disabled persons, due to the advent of disabled veterans. Several protest measures were adopted, all over Britain, to bring in legislation to uphold the rights of the disabled. The outcome of these protests was the enactment of the Disabled Persons Act in 1944, which allowed for a three percent reservation in jobs. The 1995 Disability Discrimination Act rescinded this reservation, it is unfortunate, that the disabled are deemed to be a burden on society (Cole, 2006. Pp. 149 – 150). It is essential to impose restrictive measures on the able bodied, although, only to a limited extent, in order to accord similar access to the disabled. The Disability Discrimination Act is the culmination of a protracted struggle to implement the rights of the disabled. It was enacted on the 8th of November 1995. In the year 1999, the UK parliament enacted the Disability Rights Commission Act, which brought into being the Disability Rights Commission. Two major goals of this commission are to ensure equal opportunity and to prevent discrimination, Vis – a – Vis the disabled. However, from the 1st of October, 2007 these objectives have become the duty of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (The Disability Rights Commission , 2007). Under the Disability Discrimination Act, the employer is under an obligation to make reasonable changes to the workplace, in order to make it conducive for a disabled person to work effectively. Moreover, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, specifies guidelines to determine the reasonableness of modifications to be made in the workplace (Employment rights and the Disability Discrimination Act). Some of the cases, in which the tenets of the Disability Discrimination Act had not been adhered to, are discussed in the sequel. In Vernon v. Roper, the golf club had refused the appellant to use a motorized golf cart. The court opined that it was incumbent upon the golf club to make such provisions as would have made it conducive for the appellant to avail himself of the club’s facilities (Lawson Gooding, 2005. P. 153). In Glover v. Hannah’s cafe, the claimant had a specially trained dog that helped him to find his way, as he was blind. In addition, to his blindness, he had also been afflicted with diabetes. He was prevented from entering Hannah’s cafà ©, to obtain a snack for maintaining his blood sugar level, because of the dog accompanying him. The court took strong exception to this callous act of the restaurant staff and awarded exemplary damages (Glover v. Hannah’ Cafe, 2003). The UN General Assembly adopted The International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities, on the 13th December 2006. This convention would bring considerable pressure to bear upon countries that do not adequately protect the rights of the disabled. Moreover, the countries, which ratify this convention, have to perforce, submit periodic reports regarding the progress made by them in protecting and promoting such rights (International disability rights and the UN Convention). Despite the aforementioned pieces of legislation, disabled people in the UK are highly underprivileged. They remain unemployed for longer durations than their able bodied counterparts. In addition, the disabled obtain lower wages. However, the government takes disability issues very seriously, as is evidenced by the fact that the annual expenditure incurred in this context is to the tune of  £ 19 billion (Giddens, 2006. P. 288). How to cite Review of the Disabled in the United Kingdom, Papers

Week 3- Introduction to Ethics and Professionalism Part 1: Solving of Ethical Dilemmas Week 3 -Discussion Forum answers The Cultural Issues that can have an impact on an ICT Professional if one of the Organization Merges with another Being an ICT Professional, there are indeed numerous cultural issues that will have an impact on me especially if my organization has merged with another one. For example, such an impact can occur in cross cultural issues as the tradition in which such people in the different organization execute their jobs. It is prudent to note that the culture of an organization can either help or even hurt its productivity through the creation of an environment which promotes a good or viable work ethic. Having the appropriate organizational culture implies that a business is capable of performing its competition (Flatau et al, 2017). Generally, merging one particular culture into another one may actually be called using different names such as development, transculturation, or eclecticism. As an ICT professional, the merging of an organization with another one which has a different cultural background may prove hectic to me because not only will it create communication barriers among the people I will interact with but it also implies that it I will take a significant time before I finally comprehend what is associated to their cultural backgrounds. The Framework that will be used in Analyzing Scenarios in Assignment One After going through the seminar for this week, I opted to use the Macdonald framework in order to effectively analyze the scenario. I highly believe that the Macdonald framework is the best and easy one since it covers all areas that can help in solving the issue in the case study. The steps involved in the Macdonald framework greatly help in analysis of not only stakeholders, but also in the decisions impact, professionalism, and ethics. This is quite true since Macdonald greatly helps in the recognition of moral dimensions on staff management in the scenario because it comprises of sketches and principles about the next course of action. Apart from that, Macdonald further suggests the taking of legal decisions which are within the organizational rules. This is because it further discusses decisions with the appropriate persona and the effects of decisions which have been implemented. In essence, the major reason as to why I selected the Macdonald framework in making decisions is th at its wide range of steps helps in coming up with good decisions. For the Macdonald framework to work better, it is important to ensure that each sequence is followed one by one. Analyzing of a Situation In the organization I was working in during internship, one of my friend found that the accountant had not locked the door and therefore he decided to take 5000 dollars. He informed me that he was ready to share with me the amount as long as I did not reveal the sensitive information to anyone in our company. In order to ascertain whether this indeed was an unethical situation, I asked myself several questions such as how will the accountant feel to realize that I knew the person who took the money and I did not reveal him? What if the office we were in had the CCTVs in it and our conversation was being reported? One of the facts I needed to consider was the reaction of my friend if I told him to return back the money. In order to help me come up with a viable decision and responses to such questions, I had to use the Whites 3-step method to effectively frame my responses. As an ICT professional, it is quite unethical to take anything that belongs to another person without permission and thus the action that was taken by my friend of taking money from the accountants office without authority was straight away an unethical behavior. That apart, the endeavors by my friend to bribe me in order to keep quite or keep a secret was also unethical because as a professional, I am supposed to reveal any evil deeds that occur in my organization. the Companys Value Statement/Code of Ethics Based on the organization that I was working for while I was in internship, it is quite evident that it had a good code of ethics. This is attributed to the fact that all the employees in the organization were supposed to have Personal Integrity. This implied that the employees in the organization were supposed to act with due care and intelligence and ensure that any decisions which they made were not only fair and honest but they were also timely, impartial, and considered all information which was relevant. That apart the Relationships/Interaction of employees with others was supposed to be positive. This implies that they should treat all people in the organization with sensitivity, courtesy, respect and also ensure that they realize their safety, welfare, rights, and interests. That apart, employees in the organization were also supposed to be Accountable (Morris et al, 2017). This implies that the employees were supposed to use the resources of the organization in an accountabl e and responsible way and ensure that they are not only efficient, but also appropriate and effective use of the financial, natural, physical, information, property, and human resources in the organization. A Discussion of the Ethical, Professional, and Legal issues that arose from the Scenario Week 3 Journal There is lots of information, experience, and knowledge that I have learnt in the professional Environments, Internship activities, as well as learning week. As an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Practitioner, I have learnt to not only how to effectively manage risks at my respective place of work but I have also learnt the various issues of sustainability and made aware of the various aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility at my place of work. It is through the learning week and internship activities that I was able to learn that at all times, I am always supposed to not only behave ethically but also deal with any daily events as well as problems in which the occurrence of conflicts of interests can make the arrival of decisions that are ethically correct to become a problem. It is also through the learning week that I was accorded with the opportunity of examining numerous problems in theory which significantly helped me in resolving any issues in an ethical man ner whenever they arose at the work place. The use of case studies helped me to get first hand information on how issues should be handled in a professional and ethical manner in the organization. The second Case study Based on the second case study on the Conflict of Interest, it is quite apparent that it will unprofessional and unethical for Hardeep, the IT manager of the government department to award the tender to Company B just because the owner of the company and General Manager, a Mr. Mandeep is his best friend. That apart, it will also be unethical for Mr. Hardeep to award the tender to of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to company B knowing or being well aware that despite the fact that its software appears less as opposed to that of company B, it will ultimately become expensive at last because it will require some of modifications before it is finally used thus increased the costs. Despite the fact that Hardeep got a phone call requesting a favor from Mandeep, it is important that he does not honour the favor even though his friend wants the work. Based on the case study, it is quite evident that the friendship that Hardeep has with Mandeep will quite ultimately result in an ethical problem especially if Hardeep goes ahead and awards the contract to his friend Mandeep knowing very well that his friend will be supplying substandard software that will eventually require some modifications in future. Owing to the fact that Hardeep is heading a government department which is also in the public sector, it will be important for him to ensure that the minimum standards of conduct and integrity are duly compiled with and also expressed through three major principles namely personal integrity, relationships with others, and on accountability. This implies that Hardeep must act with due diligence and care and ensure that the decisions he makes on behalf of the organization and not only fair and honest but they are also impartial and they are done for the general good and benefit of the organization. That apart, Hardeep must also ensure that he treats all individuals in the organization with utmost sensitivity, courtesy, and respect and also ensure that he duly puts into consideration the welfare, the safety, the rights, and the interests of all stakeholders in the organization. That apart, it will be prudent for Hardeep as the organizational manager to ensure that he becomes accountable to the organization. This implies that Hardeep should use the resources belonging to the state organization in an accountable and manner which will ensure that there is efficient, appropriate, and effective use or utilization of the organizations physical, financial, natural, and human resources. As an employee of the public sector, Hardeep will also be forced to ensure that he strictly follows the codes of conduct and more specifically the principles of official conduct based on the Public Sector Principles of part 2 of the Public Sector management Act 1994 (the Act which fully outlines the relevant principles associated with public administration as well as management, conduct, and human resource management. This implies that Hardeep should always ensure that all decisions that he makes on behalf of the company do not negatively affect it but rather should work for the common good of the organization. Week 4- Introduction to Ethics and Professionalism Part 2: It Governance and legal Requirements Journal Entry Based on my internship activities, professional environment, and other general learning aspects, I can truly assert that there is a lot that I have learnt regarding not only corporate values but also about Corporate Culture. It is actually through them that I have learnt about the appropriate professional and ethical behaviours that I am supposed to uphold while at not only my place of work as an ICT professional but also while interacting with all people of the society under different situations or circumstances. My internship provided me with a good opportunity of knowing the values corporate values that had to been embraced by various stakeholders in the organization. It is through the internship program I underwent that I was able to ascertain that indeed, there were various Corporate Statements, Visions, and Values that were embraced by the organization and which greatly helped it to not only achieve its goals and productivity but to also enable it to become more productive and generate more profitability as a business entity. That apart, it is through the professional environments and learning that I was made aware that some of the major reasons as to why some organizations displayed their corporate values and explicitly tied them towards their respective goods or services was so as to secure the confidence of the consumers or customers and also create a harmonious working environment. It is also through learning that I was able to know that values greatly determined the behavior of an organization and also formed the basis for the codes of conduct of such an organization. Forum Feedback In the company that I worked in, there was no evidence of a Formal Information Technology Governance Framework but however, to ensure that it had efficiency, value, and control, there was a set of rules and regulations hanged in the organization which were supposed to be followed by all and sundry. One of the situations in my internship in which I will be supposed to take into account or consideration of the Australian Standard in order to fulfill my ICT task is when I am doing the cabling for any network in the organization. I will ensure that I use appropriate cables that conform to the Australian standard. While networking computers to the Intranet in my internship organization, I will have to ensure that I take into account compliance or legislation in order to fulfill my ICT task so that the organization is not sued for failing to comply with the legislation.
